First off, would your four man gang have passed on the opportunity to kill a solitary ship passing through your gate camp? I find it highly unlikely. 4 vs. 1 would be ganking or blobbing or whatever you want to call it, so you would've been guilty of the same conduct. Would have only attacked another four man gang so that it would only have been "fair and honorable" combat?
Second, this game takes plenty of skill, but you are confusing "skill" with "skillpoints, isk, and the basic knowledge of how your mods work." Skill is being able to counter the tactics of your enemies. In this case, being able to counter blob tactics. Guess what? You can. I've seen it dozens of times. Smaller gangs ripping big gangs apart with superior tactics. Yes, people who blob have no skill either, but sitting around in big fat ships that are sitting ducks is not skill either.
You basically approached gate camping like you were playing WoW. The four of you bought some of the biggest regular combat ships around, outfitted them with some of the best equipment, and sat on a gate or travelled around waiting for a "duel." That's how people fight in WoW, and other MMOs. Getting the best equipment and going to duel or battlegrounds or whatever. EVE is a free-for-all, and having skillpoints and isk is not enough. You reference your skillpoints like that means anything in regard to your actual combat skill. It doesn't.
In EVE you need real combat tactics. I'm not talking about knowing what mods to equip or when to turn them on, and having the skillpoints to use the best stuff. I'm talking hit & run, maneuverability, splitting up the enemy, leading them into traps, etc. You know, the stuff that's done in real combat. In EVE the biggest ships are also the fattest targets because they are slow and often can't escape. Smaller ships are less powerful, but they can escape blobs and use hit & run techniques. You have to weigh firepower vs. maneuverability, and that's one of many issues you have to weigh in terms of what tactics to apply. Its not as simple as "scram, web, pwn." ----------------------------------------------------
